Late afternoon in Kaziranga National Park, Assam, India, when we observed a single-horned rhinoceros with her calf contently grazing, with the occasional Indian myna bird either perched on her back or picking around her feet as she moved about. Look closely at the calf and you’ll see it’s got only one ear. At first, I thought maybe it had been injured, but more likely it’s a birth defect.
