From my China 1999 trip, this night shot shows some of the urban development that’s occurred in Shanghai. Shanghai has a colourful history with heavy foreign involvement (read exploitation) throughout the 19th century. Most of the development occurred on one side of the Huangpu River whilst the Pudong district on the opposite side remained as farmland until the late 1980s when the Chinese government determined the area ripe for development. An astonishing burst of activity and investment saw the farmland converted into a showpiece of urban development within a decade.
