A brief break from the Hawaii pictures and using the “way back in time” machine (aka my archives) to revisit a photo from about 1995. On a hiking trek through the Annapurna region in Nepal, we stopped overnight on a mountain ridge with a view to the massive, snow-capped mountain, Dhaulagiri. I set up the tripod, used a cable release and a slow shutter speed, probably about 2 minutes (not recorded) to capture “Dhaulagiri by moonlight”.
Some brief facts about the mountain;
-
at 26,794 feet (8,167 meters) Dhaulagiri is the 7th highest peak in the world.
-
the name is derived from the Sanskrit Dhavali giri meaning “White Mountain.”
-
Dhaulagiri rises over 7,000 meters above the Kali Gandaki Gorge (one of the world’s deepest gorges).
-
it wasn’t climbed until 1960 (about 7 years after the first ascent of Everest)
-
it was first sighted by Europeans in 1808 at which time it was believed to be the tallest mountain in the world. (Source: climbing.about.com)
Given that the photograph was taken around 1995 (I’d have to dig out my old expired passport to get the right date) obviously it was taken on film, colour negative. Having scanned the negative into the computer a few years ago, I did post it to the web some time ago. On revisiting it, I wasn’t happy with the colour balance and so corrected that, and I also selectively applied noise reduction so as to overcome some of the film grain evident in the lower part of the sky. ~KD.
